australian open highlights

January 25, 2007

so it's serena williams (usa) vs. maria sharapova (russia) who will fight it out for the women's finals (singles) in the Australian Open. williams defeated nicole vaidisova (czech republic) in 2 sets, 7-6, 6-4; meanwhile sharapova dispatched kim clijsters (belgium) with relative ease at 6-4, 6-2.

this should be an interesting screaming and grunting match as both players are champion on-court screamers.

in the men's singles, roger federer (switzerland) will be meeting andy roddick (usa) in a highly anticipated match to determine who will move on to the finals. the other semi-finals match is between Tommy Haas (germany) and fernando gonzalez (chile).

I’m so glad Sharapova is in! I was so disappointed with Nadal’s game recently against Fernando Gonzalez. Darn, the match only lasted for 3 sets. I want Roddick to win but at this point Federer is impossible to defeat. I’m watching the game tonight with my bestfriend… cant wait! :-)

I honestly can’t decide if I like Maria Sharapova. She’s a great player, but her father is a stereotypical tennis dad - someone fans love to hate. But I like Kim Clijsters. She’s the nicest girl on tour (but will retire next year).
Serena announced she’ll be no. 1 again and a lot of people snickered. Now she’s making her point, and I’m not too happy about it either. If only she’s not too pompous.
But this women’s final, it’s going to be a real battle for sure. I’m hoping Masha will win it all.
Did you happen to watch the quarterfinal match between gonzalez and nadal? At the end of the 1st set, Nadal took off his shirt to change, and the stadium erupted with whistles and Wo-hoo! shouts from girls and guys alike. Poor kid; that’s what he gets for being so chiseled at such a young age, hehe.

exactly. i feel bad for nadal. this would’ve been a more exciting competition if he got into the semi-finals at least. i want roddick to win, too, if only to see a different pair of hands raising the winner’s trophy this year. but i have this feeling that federer will win. we’ll see…

i’ve never been a fan of the williams sisters. they’re too brashy and too full of themselves (their dad, too!) esp. during their heydays. serena? oh please…!

so i guess i’ll have to go with sharapova. well, of course her dad is also a thorny issue, but she does look better :)

pahabol… did you hear about this aussie commentator who claimed that there was this guy sitting with the williams family who kept raising his wrist whenever nicole v. was serving?

the aussie insists that the light reflecting from this guy’s wristwatch would reflect on nicole’s face when she served, thereby affecting her performance.

serena brushed this off with a laugh. nicole said she did not even notice it.

To his credit, Gonzalez was on fire that match. He was blasting winners left and right and was defending well, too. I think Nadal may have been a little taken by surprise. He looked lost out there.

I kinda like Nicole, though sometimes she’s mentally fragile. She’s so young (17?) and have quite a temper. I wasn’t able to watch her match against Serena but I heard about the issue. If Nicole said she didn’t notice, well then it doesn’t matter. I’m sure she’ll say something had she felt something is off.

hmm… too bad roddick lost (3 straight sets). oh well

Darn, I can’t believe it! 3 sets in a row. Anyhow, it was really expected anyway. Federer is really unstoppable. Another sure title for the Swiss superstar!

I snuck out of the office yesterday just to watch federer play roddick at Sid’s in Jupiter. They’ve got this really big projector screen showing the AOpen so it’s like watching a movie. I think Rog is peaking at the right time. His loss to Roddick at Kooyong more than a fortnight ago may have been due to holiday rust. Rog was just in the zone yesterday. I’ve never seen a more beautiful performance than that one. Serena is a sore loser. When Jen Capriati was making it a habit of trampling all over her a couple of years ago, Serena would complain about phantom illnesses and would suddenly retire.
