IF you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.

anime update

April 1, 2007

the last few days have given me enough time to browse through the latest addition to my anime archives.

as advertised, Elf Princess Rane turned out to be rollicking romp. it's a type of anime feature that requires repeated viewings from a serious anime fan to appreciate the true dimensions of its chaotic, demented plotline and its zany, self-absorbed characters.

despite its short length (2 OVA episodes), it's well stocked with standard anime parodies — watch out for its adventure-crazy, reality-challenged protagonist (Takarada Go), his innumerable sisters, and this guy with the huge, wavy hair (he's a riot!) — and verbal puns that will make your head spin. Beware, though, you need to be a really fast reader (or a sharp listener if you opt for the english version) in order to keep up with what everyone is is saying. most of the characters here talk funny, some are just plainly weird.

i'm still working my way through All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku (TV series). It's a fairly well-loved oldie (late 1990s i think) and just happens to feature the iconic voice of my favorite seiyuu Megumi Hayashibara as the super girl android who will do anything  to protect her 'brother.'

sadly though, i realized too late that this was not the original OVA (which was released in the early 1990s) that i had wanted to see all this time. in this version, they toned down the original antagonist of the series, Mrs. Ryonosuke, and added another baddie. this time, the focus is mostly on Nuku-Nuku's travails as she learns — with hilarious results — how to co-exist with her human (high school) classmates.

**********

UPDATE: below is a short video (youtube) encapsulating some of the memorable roles that have made megumi hayashibara a household name in Japan as well as any anime-loving household the world over… (by the way, the voice you hear in this mish-mashed clip is hers — she usually sings the theme songs featured in some of the series she appears in as well as in other anime shows)

Your anime ventures make me wish I was already old enough to buy my own CDs. *_*

Hay… sige na lang, I’ll get old enough soon. “Elf Princess Rane” seems like a very interesting series the way you described it. “Innumerable sisters” ey?

do you live somewhere here in manila? if you promise to take care of my stuff, maybe i can lend you a few…

‘innumerable’ is more or less a figure of speech because they all look the same and they keep popping up all over the place. don’t expect logic or sanity when you’re watching EPR (it’s like FLCL, El Hazard or Dragon Half)

oh… that’s such a shame! I live in Mindanao! @_@

Grabe… sayanga uy. Sige na lang. My family never really liked Manila. Why transfer there with all the pollution and the buildings if we could just live here in Kidapawan? It’s safe (usually), cold (kinda at night), and has lots of trees for the supply of oxygen for our bodies. xD

The only problem we really have left here is the fact that my parent’s work are still kind of far from here. But never mind about that. :)

yup it’s a cruel trade-off. still, living in the city does have its compensations. and my work is here :(
