IF you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.

another election… ho-hum

October 28, 2007

these past few days i’d been trying to ignore the fact that it’s election time once again but its ugly head continues to rear whichever way i look so i guess i might as well squeeze some mileage out of it. yes, that’s right. onyxx the grouch goes ranting again.

i can’t believe it’s been months since i last wrote my piece on campaign jingles. each time i read that post, all the things that make me squirm or roll my eyes about philippine elections — grandstanding politicos who never seem to get tired of hearing their own voices, muck-racking, crappy campaign jingles, self-serving political slogans — come rushing back with a vengeance.

so, what’s different about this SK election?

for one thing it’s on a smaller scale, which makes things a bit easier to swallow. the leaflets, the banners and the blaring campaign vehicles are still there, but at least they’re not as blatant or raucous as those in the may 14 elections. another thing i’ve noticed is that there seem to be a lot more ’sponsored’ drinking sessions in the sidewalks these days as well as street parties (free food and drinks always seem to attract voters) on weekends.

thankfully i’d been spared the prospect of being accosted in the street by some exuberant politician (who always seems to want to be your best friend during the campaign period). well, of course, it could still happen one of these days. i’m keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t.

*yawn* somebody wake me up when it’s over.

great pick up lines

October 25, 2007

yesterday i came across this site that featured funny pick up lines. some of the standard lines came across as goofy, dorky, downright corny or just a breath away from being offensive, but a few gems made me grin and shake my head despite myself.

i don't know if any of guys have already tried or had been on the receiving end of these blatant come-ons, but here are a few of them: [p.s. pick out the best one and try it, then let me know if you scored.]

"Can i buy you a drink — or would you just prefer the five bucks?"

"Apart from being sexy, what do you do for a living?"

As she's leaving….
He: "Hey aren't you forgetting something?"
She: "What?"
He: "Me!?"

Ask a woman for the time.
"10:30? So today is June 10, 2007, at 10:30 PM, thanks I just wanted to be able to remember the exact moment that I met you."
[awww!!]

"Do you have the time?" [Girl gives the time] "No, the time to write down my number?"

"Don't you know me from somewhere?"

"Excuse me, I just noticed you noticing me and I just wanted to give you notice that I noticed you too."

He: "You look like my third wife"
She: "Oh, how many time have you been married?"
He: "Twice."

"Hi. My name is ______. I'm running for president in 2012. And I could sure use your vote. Here…write down your number and I'll call you to discuss my platform."
[this one has my vote]

"I have a cat. She would really like to meet you."
[hanep… ginawa pang alibi ang pusa]

"I'm invisible." (Really?) "Can you see me?" (Yes) "How about tomorrow night?"

"Nice to meet you, I'm ______ and you are…gorgeous!"
[nice! 10 pogi points for you, romeo.]

"Well, here I am. What were your other two wishes?"

"When I saw you from across the room, I passed out cold and hit my head on the floor…so I'm going to need your name and number for insurance reasons."

"When you look into the mirror holding up a dozen roses, you see the 13 most beautiful things in the world."

He: "Looks like we're late."
She: "For what?"
He: "For dinner. Your choice this time, I'm buying."

"You see my friend over there?" [point to a friend who sheepishly waves from afar] "He wants to know if YOU think I'M cute.
[heheheh… kapal]

"When God made you, he was showing off."

************

here are also a few lines that, depending on your luck, may earn you a positive response or else a slap in the face.

Turn to the girl sitting next to you at the bar and say, "I'm not really this tall….I'm sitting on my wallet."

"Baby did you fart, 'cause you blow me away!"
[this guy is begging for a beating he'll never forget]

He: "Excuse me did you just feel my ass?"
She: "No."
He: "Why not?"

"So, are you going to give me your phone number, or am I going to have to stalk you?"

"You are like a candy bar: half sweet and half nuts."

"You are so sweet…I'm getting a toothache just looking at you…"

"You know the more I drink, the prettier you get!"

dumbledore is gay!

October 21, 2007

*gasp* what's this? according to j.k. rowling, the formidable, bespectacled supreme HP wizard was actually gay. and what's more, he's supposed to have fallen in love with Gellert Grendelwich (Grinwald)!

err… this leaves me STUPEFIED and flabbergasted.

rowling herself made this revelation at the Carnegie Hall in New York City yesterday, in an event where she met with young HP fans and their parents.

other juicy tidbits: Neville Longbottom eventually marries Hannah Abbott, but Hagrid won't be as lucky apparently (giantesses are rare finds in his neck of the woods, i suppose).

i guess the cat's out of the bag now weeheheh….

leftover gourmand

October 20, 2007

i finally ran out of cooking gas today. i rarely cook so i always find it hard to keep track of how long it takes to use up the content of one tank.

i ran out of bread, too, so i only had one option left — other than going out to eat — scrounge for whatever leftover food i could find in the fridge. after going through an array of unappetizing and strange-looking items, i finally took out a couple of eggs. how to cook them — now that’s the $64 question.

driven by hunger (i finally hit the gym yesterday after a 2-month hiatus), i dusted off my rarely-seen-and-used oven toaster and wondered what to do next. then i placed the scrambled eggs on a folded-up aluminum foil container and slid the whole thing in.

i haven’t really cooked eggs this way before so i wasn’t too sure about the outcome. i figured as long as it’s cooked my stomach wouldn’t know the difference anyway (it’s been growling since i woke up).

for good measure, i added a couple of leftover sausages and a half-eaten barbecue chicken, which i bought about 4 days days ago, and a biggie pandesal that i found lurking among the cookies that i packed away last night.

ping.

finally. i took out the scrambled eggs first. *grin* it looked like yellowy, puffed-up square bibingka. hmmm. what do you know, it actually worked! it tasted ok. maybe not as tasty as it could have been if cooked over a stove, but it was edible. next came the chicken, sausages and pandesal, and they looked brown and yummy.

for the next few minutes i was in hog heaven.

normally leftover food leave me cold, but today i had a scrumptious feast out of these half-forgotten stuff. maybe it was because i was really hungry. whatever. at least it cleared away some space in my fridge. and oh yeah, it gave me a nifty excuse to write. hee-haw![my only regret is that i forgot to snap a picture of my feast before i gulped it down.]

what’s on my desktop

October 11, 2007

this is a new tag from karmee. frankly i'm not quite sure if i'm doing this right, but it looks like it has something to do with one's desktop so here's hoping i won't mess it up too much.

my desktop? it's as boring as you can imagine (see below).

i guess i got too tired of changing wallpapers. i got over that stage pretty quickly (i must have changed wallpapers and themes on a daily basis for 2 weeks after my laptop arrived). finally i just let the whole thing go and settled on the same old boring Windows background (appropriately named "Bliss"). it seemed fitting somehow, considering the clutter of icons strewn up all over the screen.

some of the icons represent some downloads, Creative's ZVM tools, Limewire, etc. maybe one of these days i'll get tired of looking at the same junk and actually clean up the mess. but for now, that's all there is folks.

which reminds me, i'm supposed to pass the buck to somebody else so i call on venk_man, alia and pseudoshrink to shed some light on their desktop. c'mon guys, time to 'fess up.

i was able to watch Stardust last night, and bottomline, i think it's worth the wait. surprisingly the theater (G4) was almost full when i got in.

as expected, the film at some point veered away from the book. the filmmaker inserted a typical hollywood ending and actually squeezed a few things up (some parts were expanded, a few were deleted) to make the story more compact, and i guess to make it a bit more audience-friendly.

robert de niro's Capt. Shakespeare is a real hoot. for those of you who think of de niro as a real bad-ass… well, let's just say he will definitely rock your world in this picture heheh. even now i still smirk whenever i remember his antics. the 7 princes of Stormhold are out-of-this-world funny and michelle pfeiffer is great (although she really looks increasingly hideous as the movie goes on).
