moyashimon’s dancing microbes

moyashimon is one of those quirky anime shows that just happens to focus on — of all things — microbes! or rather, a 17-year-old college freshman who can see bacteria.

at first i thought moyashimon would be one of those intimidatingly technical, icky things. but as it happily turns out (for me at least), it’s actually an amusing series that manages to combine a few things: it’s basically a comedy show that’s spiced with a bit of science, growing pains, campus life, and even some gender confusion issues, among other things.

moyashimon’s main protagonist is tadayasu iwasaki, who is basically your average hapless teenager who enrols in an agriculture university in Tokyo. slightly embarassed about his “unique talent,” he tries to hide it at first but things have a way of conspiring against him and this, of course, leads to all sorts of hilarious incidents.

in any case, here’s the opening song of this series (complete with frolicking, cuddly-looking microbes).

I’ve never seen something like this! You know what, I’ll definitely check this out once I have more time.

In college, I spent one semester growing microbes and all that… but the labwork did nothing but escalate my being a alcohol-loving, germ-freak. Haha. That’s why I’d love to see this anime.

moyashimon isn’t really laugh-out-loud funny (although there are a couple of guys there who kept cracking me up).

i got curious over this series after i had read its synopsis — at first glance it feels like a tough sell (we’re talking about microbes here heheh), but the writers managed to keep things interesting. and those puckish bacteria looked benign and cute
